Crunchyroll Reveals August Blu-Ray Lineup

Crunchyroll has just revealed their planned list of releases for Blu-ray in August. The first will be the long overdue physical release of The Concierge, the feature film from Production IG that was released in Japan in 2023, then in US theaters last year.

The concierge of the title is Akino, a trainee who’s just started out at Hokkyoku, the department store with a very unusual purpose: it caters entirely to anthropomorphic talking animals. Akino runs around to fulfill the wishes of customers with a myriad of needs and problems, with the goal of earning the right to be hired on full-time.

The store’s most valued clients are extinct species (who aren’t extinct in the film’s world) and Akino must do anything she can to please them. The film is the first feature production from director Yoshimi Itazu (Welcome to the Ballroom), and is an adaption of the book The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store by Tsuchika Nishimura.

One week later, The Concierge will be followed by THREE releases…the biggest being the physical debut of No Longer Allowed in Another World Season 1, an isekai about an early 20th-century gothic author who’s been pulled into a lively, wacky fantasy land with RPG mechanics. It will be released as both Standard and Collector’s Editions, with the more expensive containing three art cards. Special features in both editions include episode previews, promo videos and, of course, textless opening and ending sequences.

Don’t forget One Piece…Season 14 Voyage 6 hits Blu for the first time August 19, and Collection 38 (spanning episides 917 to 940) comes out a week later. Here’s Crunchyroll’s full list of August Blu-rays, with links to the store.

Sakamoto Days Are Here Again

…or they will be come July 14.

That’s when Netflix just announced the hit anime series, which they have the exclusive on, will return with weekly episodes. Sakamoto Days is about the days of Sakamoto — Taro Sakamoto, once the most skilled and feared assassin in Japan. He had a very successful career, until the day he fell in love and decided to retire from it.

Sakamoto now lives in the countryside, operating a mom-and-pop convenience store with his wife and daughter. To say he’s gotten out of shape is an understatement; his pudgy cheeks bounce like a squirrel’s whenever he moves. Try as he might, Sakamoto can’t escape from his past, which begins returning to him the day Shin, another ex-assassin with the ability to read minds, discovers his location. Shin insists he must stay to protect Sakamoto, and one episode later so does Lu, the daughter of a powerful mob boss.

BUT…Sakamoto doesn’t seem to need much protecting. In fact it’s often he who saves Shin and Lu. Turns out none of those skills left him after all these years, and he can still dance around with precision despite his portly build. In fact, after the harder battles Sakamoto actually works off all his fat and regains his original form…but it takes about an hour for him to pig out and become fat again.

When Sakamoto Days was cut off, it had just introduced the title character’s biggest threat yet: a team of psycho-killers sprung from death row thanks to a big baddie who calls himself Slur. On Slur’s command, they are to track down and murder the Order, the league of assassins Sakamoto once belonged to. And they don’t care that he’s not part of it anymore! Sakamoto’s big problem is that his wife says she’ll leave if he ever kills again. Can he eliminate this new threat to his family and friends without taking any lives?

Sakamoto Days will stream in both sub and dub form; the English cast stars Matthew Mercer (Taro Sakamoto), Dallas Liu (Shin Asakura), Vinnie Hacker (Slur), Rosie Okumura (Aoi Sakamoto), Rosalie Chang (Lu Shaotang), Lexi Cabrera (Obiguro) and Xolo Mariduena (Heisuke Mashimo). The show returns July 14…and if you haven’t seen Part 1, it’s streamable right now.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Will Include Sneak Peek Of Infinity Castle

Some of you have been wondering why Aniplex’s upcoming re-release of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train seemed to include just the movie and nothing else, even if said movie has an increased resolution. Typically things like this have bonuses like interviews, behind the scenes featurettes or even sneak previews of what’s next. Looks like Aniplex heard you: they confirmed today an advance look at the next Demon Slayer film, Infinity Castle, will be included.

“Fans and audiences can catch an exclusive teaser sneak peek of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle when Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train arrives in theatres in stunning 4K on May 14, distributed by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment,” says Crunchyroll’s PR team. So there you have it, folks.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is set to premiere in the US September 11, 2025. It picks up where the last season of the TV series left off, when Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke had finished their training under the Hashira and, after months of getting kicked around, were preparing to enter the demon stronghold, the Infinity Castle, and take the fight to them. From this point forward the manga will be adapted as movies, not TV seasons.

As for Mugen Train, it follows the events of Season One. Over forty passengers have disappeared without a trace after they boarded the titular train, and Tanjiro and his pals are on the case. They are soon joined by one of the most powerful swordsmen of the Demon Slayer Corps, Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku…but even with him on their side, can they face what they’re up against?

You probably already know the answer to that question, but if you’d like to see the resolution again up close (or you’ve somehow never seen it at all) the opportunity just opened. Tickets are on sale today for Demon Slayer: Mugen Train; follow this link to Fandango to see where it’ll be playing nearest you.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will be shown in both sub and dub form. The train starts rolling again May 14; you can also see it on Crunchyroll in both its original state and the TV season it was divided into.

solo leveling panel

Revelations From The Solo Leveling FYC Panel

Yesterday at the Television Academy’s Wolf Theatre in North Hollywood, Crunchyroll hosted a For Your Consideration (FYC) screening of its most-watched new anime series, Solo Leveling. If you’ve never heard of FYC screenings before, they’re designed to get the attention of Emmy voters. Episodes 22–24 from the second season were played in their entirety.

After the screening, Crunchyroll executive Travis Page introduced a panel with Solo Leveling producers Sota Furuhashi (Aniplex), Atsushi Kaneko (A-1 Pictures), and Kanako Takahashi (Crunchyroll), along with English voice cast Aleks Le (voice of Sung Jinwoo) and Michelle Rojas (voice of Cha Hae-in). The panel was moderated by TheWrap’s Raquel Harris.

Solo Leveling launched with a simuldub, and producer Atsushi Kaneko admitted getting the English version ready at the same time as the Japanese premiere was difficult, but that it was “a challenge that proved worthwhile once we saw the global response,” adding, “traveling and seeing the fandom first hand reminds me how powerful entertainment can transcend borders—even when it comes from Japan.” “Our job is to balance authenticity and accessibility, so fans everywhere feel seen,” added Crunchyroll producer Kanako Takahashi. Producer Sota Furuhashi revealed that more than 220,000 frames of animation were created for the second season of Solo Leveling: “Maybe by the next Olympics, we’ll be ready for what’s next.”

English voice actor Michelle Rojas said that voicing a Korean character felt meaningful given her heritage, and that it was the first time in her career she’d gotten the chance to do so. Aleks Le also feels a connection to Sung Jinwoo: “As an Asian immigrant, I saw myself in him. Watching his growth and bringing that to life was incredibly meaningful.”

After the panel, Producer Sota Furuhashi (Aniplex) and Animation Producer Atsushi Kaneko (A-1 Pictures) took part in a live Reddit AMA where they answered questions from fans. You can check out that thread at this link. Seasons 1 and 2 of Solo Leveling are streamable anytime on Crunchyroll.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train

Tickets Now On Sale For Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’s 4K Run

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train was a huge hit for Aniplex, and not just in its home country. It grossed $43,956,487 in its first month, had the highest opening weekend in domestic box office history for any foreign language film, and went on to become the second-highest grossing Japanese anime film in North America. It’s also currently the highest-grossing Japanese anime movie of all time and the highest-grossing Japanese film at the global box office. All that is especially amazing when you consider this was 2020. Not many movies did very well in the theaters that year.

It’s understandable, then, that Aniplex and Crunchyroll would think of a re-release five years later. This time, the movie will be in in 4K. Mugen Train follows the events of Season One and the same protagonist, Tanjiro. Over forty passengers have disappeared without a trace after they boarded the titular train, and Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke are on the case. They are soon joined by one of the most powerful swordsmen of the Demon Slayer Corps, Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku…but even with him on their side, can they face what they’re up against?

There will also be something related to the Anime Awards the day after they are held, possibly sales on the winners? In addition, Crunchyroll has announced the following partnerships with these retailers:

  • Throughout May, UNIQLO will be distributing Crunchyroll codes to customers, with eligible online UT purchases, that can be redeemed for a 30-day free trial of Crunchyroll*. UNIQLO has also partnered with Manga artist Remi Yamamoto to create UTme! Collection designs, available exclusively at their NYC flagship locations – UNIQLO Soho and UNIQLO 5th Avenue. • In celebration of a new JUJUTSU KAISEN x Funko Pop collection, Funko Pop will be hosting an autograph signing with the English voice cast of JUJUTSU KAISEN on May 3rd. Special Funko Hollywood Event Bundles will also be available! Event details can be found at @originalfunko and @funko_funime on Instagram.
  • Back to celebrate Ani-May, Bananya is once again partnering with Fall Guys on a collection of skins, which will be available from May 1 to May 8. Featured characters include Bananya and Droopy Eared Bananya!
  • Demon Slayer fans can gear up for the first film of the highly-anticipated Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle trilogy coming to theatres this September with a special Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train re-release in theatres this May!

Several Blu-Ray sets are planned for release in May, most notably Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 1 Part 2 in a special collector’s edition (preorders will be open May 15). Crunchyroll will re-release Satoshi Kon’s Paranoia Agent and Goblin Slayer Season 1 in Steelbooks on April 30. Also, if you have too many, the company is also introducing the SteelNook, an open display case designed to fit four standard SteelBooks at once.

Oh yeah, and Crunchyroll has their own game service. You just might’ve not known because it’s only available to Mega and Ultimate Fan members globally. But it’s getting the excellent tactical RPG classic Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth in May (actually, it’s getting it tomorrow, April 30, but it still counts). Several new titles will be added to Crunchyroll Game Vault’s library throughout the month of May.

As a preteen kid would say on Christmas, “Had enough, or are ya thirsty for more?” Crunchyroll’s Ani-May celebration begins in just two days.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Returns to Theaters In 4K

If you missed your chance to see Demon Slayer: Mugen Train when it premiered on the big screen in 2020 — and I guess there’s a valid reason why you might have skipped going to the movies that year — a second chance is on the horizon. Aniplex and Crunchyroll are preparing to re-release the film in theaters next month, this time in 4K.

The movie follows the events of Season One and the same protagonist, Tanjiro.

Despite the pandemic, the movie did VERY well for itself, staying in the Top Ten for weeks upon weeks and earning $43,956,487 in its first month. It had the highest opening weekend in domestic box office history for any foreign language film, and went on to become the second-highest grossing Japanese anime film in North America — and that was just in this country. It’s also the highest-grossing Japanese anime movie of all time and the highest-grossing Japanese film at the global box office. Given all that, you can see why Aniplex would feel like giving this film a second run.

Mugen Train itself is not hard to find and is available anywhere in multiple forms — the movie was cut into episodes of a TV season, streamed on Crunchyroll and broadcast on Toonami. The original movie version is available on streaming too.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will be shown in both sub and dub form. Tickets will go on sale on April 30; the train starts rolling again May 14.

Attack On Titan: The Last Attack

Attack On Titan: The Last Attack Comes To Crunchyroll Today

Will this be the last time I ever have to write about Attack On Titan? Every time I figure I’ve written my last ever piece, a new Eren-related news item pops into the inbox. This time, I have to report that the film Attack On Titan: The Last Attack has been made available on the Crunchyroll app.

The feature, released in the US last February for one day, is a re-sewing of the two extended-length episodes that ended the series on television. Those two episodes are already on Crunchyroll. I guess whether you watch those or this is up to your personal preference.

Once again, and potentially for the very last time, here’s the plot synopsis:

Humanity lived quietly behind massive walls built to protect themselves from the threat of monstrous creatures called Titans. Their century of peace was shattered by an attack on their city that left a young child, Eren Jaeger, motherless and vowing revenge on the titans.

Years after joining the Survey Corps, Eren finds himself facing a deadly foe, and ultimately gains a special ability that unveils a new truth about the world he knows…After venturing beyond the walls and separated from his comrades, Eren finds himself inspired by this new truth and plots the “Rumbling,” a terrifying plan to eradicate every living thing in the world. With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, a motley crew of Eren’s former comrades and enemies scramble to halt his deadly mission. The only question is, can they stop him?

Attack On Titan: The Last Attack runs 145 minutes. There is nothing coming after it that we know of…yet.

Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon Now Has A Dub Trailer

Kaiju No. 8 stomps into theaters in just nine days! For those wondering if it’d be sub-only, the answer is nope…a trailer for the English dub version appeared today.

These days anime films are either original movies or omnibus films that repackage TV episodes. Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon is sort of both those things….it’s a big-screen re-edit of the first TV season, but it also contains the debut of a new episode, Hoshina’s Day Off.

In a world where kaiju are constantly emerging and causing chaos, civilization’s most vital organization are the members of the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. It’s Kafka Hibino’s biggest dream to join the force, but he’s failed every entry test he’s taken. He just doesn’t have the physical chops, until that fateful day he runs into a lone Kaiju — who merges with his body. Now he has the moves to ace the test and become the AKDF’s most valuable member — unless they learn his secret.

Here’s what Hoshina’s Day Off is like: “A day off… a rare day of peace for the Defense Force. After spending so long training, Reno has forgotten what he’s supposed to do with free time. He sees that Hoshina is up to something with his own day off, and decides to go on a mission to tail him with Iharu! But then things go in an unexpected direction…”

The first season of Kaiju No. 8 was animated by Production I.G (PSYCHO-PASS; GHOST IN THE SHELL), with artwork and design supervision by Studio Khara, and nothing’s changed about that. Mission Recon will be released April 13 and screen for three days. All episodes of Season One are currently available to stream on Crunchyroll, minus Hoshina’s Day Off. A sequel season was announced last July and is now in production.
